I am in and out of my refrigerator all of the time. Because my business is cleaning, I probably notice sooner than others might, that my fridge is looking a little messy. When you aren’t paying attention to what’s going on in your fridge you could actually be putting your family’s health in danger. Refrigerators can be breeding ground for salmonella and other bacterial diseases. How awful would you feel if your dirty fridge made someone in your family ill?
Clear your refrigerator completely. Pull out all of the drawers and shelves, even the ones on the door. Make a concoction of white vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. Get a brand new, clean sponge and wash each section of the fridge thoroughly. Wipe down the fridge and then move on to the drawers and shelves. If any of them will fit in the sink, then soak them for a bit in the mixture of warm water, vinegar, and baking soda. The rest can be washed by hand over the sink so water doesn’t get all over. Wipe everything down, you don’t want to put the damp shelves back in the fridge.
If you have glass shelves, a good cleaning with soap and water will also work, but it won’t wipe away the germs that can cause illness.
When you put away leftovers, be certain to label the containers with the date you put them away, and if the leftovers are in the fridge for a week and no one has eaten them, throw them out.
It’s a good idea to clean your refrigerator every month. Pick a Sunday around the first of each month and put the cleaning on your calendar. And, there is no reason the entire family can’t do this together. It will take much less time and distribute the workload.
