At Riverside Cleaning we are in people’s homes on a regular basis. We hear clients say often that they just can’t keep up with the clutter. As most of us have families ourselves, we can sympathize!! The advice we try to follow in our own homes is this, Organize!
A place for everything and everything in it’s place. If you have a place for everything and put things away, you won’t end up with piles of things all over your home. It is a great way to spend time up front to make your life easier later. I don’t mind organizing and sometimes even find it relaxing. But, not everyone feels that way! Here are a few ways to organize in a way that will reduce stress in your life and provide you with more time to do other things and you might even have fun!
Before you get overwhelmed, do this. Pick one room at a time and make a list. You can do this either on a computer or handwrite them in a special notebook. Then once you have finished your list, go through and check things off as you do them. It will make you feel good, and more importantly keep you on track.
Next, get rid of clutter! Less can be more! Again take one room at a time to make it easier. Sort things according to whether you want to keep them or give them away to someone who could really use either clothing or other things you may have but do not need. DO NOT keep copies of magazines for more than two months. If the mail stacked up on your counter is not a bill, recycle it. Keep your bills filed according to when they need to be paid in a specific location. Make a file for each vendor. If you pay your bills online, make up a quick spreadsheet that can be printed each month and checked off.
Use a big calendar pinned to a bulletin board in a high traffic area to organize appointments. Make sure you list all of your family’s appointments as they are made and you will be instantly organized.
Keep a grocery list on the refrigerator so that anyone in your household can write items on the list that need to be purchased. By doing this, you don’t have to go through your cupboards or refrigerator to check before you shop. To make it even easier, make up a list of standard items on your computer and print it each week. By doing this, you or anyone in your family can simply check off the item on the list.
Put your clothes away as they are laundered and make sure you hang things up that you’ve taken out of the closet and not worn before you go to bed each evening. Make sure this is on the daily “checklist” for everyone in your family and it will reduce the mess incredibly! DO ONE LOAD OF LAUNDRY AT A TIME, when it comes out of the dryer, fold or hang up the freshly laundered clothes and PUT THEM AWAY.
Don’t forget that you are not the only able bodied person in your home. Assign chores and provide incentives for completing those chores. And remember, Riverside Cleaning can help. Having a service come into your home once a week or every two weeks can take a great deal of stress away and you will have time to spend on other things.
